Both the Temple and Kingston families relocated to the Chicago area enabling John and Sydney to meet as teens. They were three years apart in age and never would have considered that a dating relationship was even feasible. However, the more they observed of each other, the more they knew they wanted to find someone like the other. Sydney was so impressed by him she even told her family, “I want to marry a ‘John Temple’ someday.”

Sydney & John

When John left for college, he continued to reach out to Sydney through Facebook messaging. Of all the girls he had met and was getting to know, she was the one that always made him want to find out more. After John came home from his first semester of college, their pages of inquiring Facebook conversations, and years of observing, translated suddenly into stars between their eyes. Stars they could not hide from themselves or anyone else. It was evident they were not only impressed with but intrigued by each other. However, Sydney was young, and John was leaving in a couple of months for a two-year church mission. While they exchanged knowing glances and enjoyed having someone they felt like they could genuinely connect with emotionally and intellectually, they had to be patient.

John and Syd wrote to each other every week for two years. They shared their thoughts, their joys, their challenges, their personal growth, their encouragement and their belief in one another. They didn’t know what it would amount to, but they were the best of friends and genuinely cared for one another. When John came home, and their eyes met again, the stars came flooding back. They started dating and the friendship and connection they had been developing continued to grow. They could have fun together, talk together, plan together, study together, resolve issues together, dream together, and even cry together. They felt at home away from home together, and home is happiness for both of them.
